Most everyone already knows the perks of being a travel agent include a multitude of travel-related discounts and gratuities the industry willingly lavishes upon those (the travel agents) who promote and sell their products. But what everyone does not realize is the loophole Melissa O’Brien stumbled upon: anyone can become a licensed travel agent lickety-split (and thus, almost automatically receive the same spoils of the travel trade). Ms. O’Brien is probably not the first to discover this loophole (in fact, having belonged to the industry herself, she probably didn’t stumble so as much as she was told), and she probably won’t be the last, but the difference between Ms. O’Brien and others is she has the gall to shout the secret's most intimate, and at times naughtiest, details to everyone who buys her eBook, "Travel Industry Secrets Revealed."
To readers, the secret will quickly seem more like common sense than hush-hush back room confidences. In reality, the travel industry willingly doles out licenses to aspiring travel agents—most, more interested in the travel(ing) than the agent(ing)— because the more people doing the industry's leg work, i.e. advertising and thus generating their business, the more money the industry, in whole and in parts, makes. It's a simple equation, really. In turn, the benefits unto a travel agent include: deep discounts, discounted as deeply as free in some instances; courtesies and upgrades a lay man or woman would not otherwise receive; and certain (and seemingly endless) niceties and fluff, such as being the first to know about the trendiest new restaurants or most secluded resorts.
Ms. O'Brien, however, in addition to simply bragging about the obvious, puts many interesting spins on the less apparent qualities of a travel agent's life. For example, while you may wish to use your license to earn a primary or secondary income, it is not necessary; you may sell nothing at all and still enjoy the "perks" the license garners. Furthermore, travel agents receive tax-incentives. As Ms. O'Brien explains, they can write-off household items previously not considered as business expenses (just imagine, applying such incentives to last months cell phone bill!). Or how about all-expense paid promotional weekends at spas more likely frequented by Hollywood stars than, well, anyone you and I actually know. Finally, as a travel agent, you can avoid working with yourself… um, that is, travel agents altogether. Instead you'll use whom the travel agents use to plan their trips at a fraction of the cost: travel consolidators. Just make sure you study up on the agent language, the lingo as Ms. O’Brien calls it, that will give you the "in" when otherwise you would be told, "sorry, sold out." This is because "Travel Industry Secrets Revealed" is about knowing there's always a red-carpeted, back, alley door entrance when everyone else thinks waiting in long lines out front is the only way to travel.
